Heat Trade For Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon In Bold Proposal

Malcolm Brogdon, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, NBA Trade Rumors

If you follow the NBA, you know what’s going on with the Miami Heat. They need a point guard. That point guard is expected to be Damian Lillard. This is the hottest rumor in the league at the moment.

Will the Heat be able to land Lillard? Time will tell. As of this writing, he’s still a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers are under no obligation to send Lillard where he wants to go. His addition to the Miami Heat is far from a foregone conclusion.

Let’s say Lillard doesn’t land in Miami. The Heat will still need a point guard. With Lillard off the table, they’ll have to start looking for alternative options. How about Malcolm Brogdon of the Boston Celtics?

The Trade Proposal

Boston Celtics Receive: G/F Duncan Robinson, F/C Kevin Love
Miami Heat Receive: G Malcolm Brogdon

Of course, if you follow the league closely enough, you know what’s going on with every team. The Celtics have made noise of their own this summer. This team traded Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis. That was a huge move.

It almost looked a bit different. Initially, the Celtics were reportedly set to send Brogdon to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team deal to net Porzingis. The deal fell through. Allegedly, the Clippers had some concerns about Brogdon’s health.

Wouldn’t the Heat share those concerns? Of course they would. With that said, this is a discount price for Brogdon. Should the Celtics accept it?

Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal

Well, Brogdon’s injury status should factor into this decision for both sides. If he’s potentially healthy enough to play, this is a bad deal for Boston. By contrast, if he’s sitting out the season, the Heat have no reason to make the move.

Let’s split the difference. Let’s assume that Brogdon should be suiting up in 2023-24. On the other hand, let’s also assume that there are concerns about his body. Now it’s worth asking: is this a good move for the Celtics? We think so. Love gives them a little boost in their front-court depth.

Yes, they’ll be crowded there. At the same time, Al Horford is aging and Robert Williams III is frequently hurt. Having an insurance policy is helpful. Finally, Robinson is a defensive liability, but he’s also one of the best movement shooters in the NBA. Should the Heat give him up for Brogdon?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

All of the same caveats apply for Miami. If they’re making this deal, we assume that there’s at least reason to hope Brogdon will play in 2023-24. Under that assumption, landing him makes perfect sense for them.

After all, he’s a good fit for this roster. The Heat need a point guard. Brogdon is solid. He can lean score-first, but that’s fine. The Heat get ample playmaking from Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler. All they need is a good player at this position.

Brogdon certainly fits that bill. He may be score-first, but not to a detriment: Brogdon is a willing passer as well. He’s also a stout defender. All told he’d be a valuable addition to this roster – even if he’s no Damian Lillard.
