One NBA writer is proposing that the Golden State Warriors acquire Joel Embiid from the Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster trade.
Lee Tran of Fadeaway World proposed that the Warriors trade Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, Kevon Looney, Gary Payton II, a 2027 first-round pick and a 2029 first-round pick to the Sixers for Embiid. Golden State would have a new Big 4 of Embiid, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
“The addition of Embiid would give the Warriors another dimension to their offense, and that is the ability to score effectively on the interior,” Tran wrote. “Throughout their dynastic run, the team has been a jump-shooting-reliant team. Though that approach has won them multiple championships, perhaps diversifying their offense could help them win more titles and extend their run.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Joel Embiid, Golden State Warriors & Philadelphia 76ers Updates
“Thompson’s inconsistency was on display in the 2023 playoffs, particularly against the Los Angeles Lakers. Joel Embiid would give the team another elite scorer, and he is a player that can help carry the offense and take some of the pressure off of Curry.”
Embiid hasn’t requested a trade from the Sixers despite James Harden asking out. The Sixers’ belief is that Embiid would like to spend his entire career with them, similar to Dirk Nowitzki with the Dallas Mavericks and Kobe Bryant with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to NBA insider Sam Amick of The Athletic.
However, if Philadelphia struggles next season, we can’t rule out the possibility of Embiid asking out. After all, the Sixers have never advanced past the second round of the playoffs in the Embiid era.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Joel Embiid, Golden State Warriors & Philadelphia 76ers Updates
In 394 regular-season games with Philly, Embiid is averaging 27.2 points and 11.2 rebounds. He has made six All-Star teams, five All-NBA teams and three All-Defensive teams and won one MVP. Embiid signed a four-year, $210 million contract extension in 2021.
The Warriors shocked the NBA world by signing Kevin Durant in the summer of 2016. Only time will tell if they cause shockwaves again and acquire Embiid.
