NBA rumors can be difficult to navigate. At times, a team can reveal their intentions – unintentionally. When a player is known to be available, it opens up opportunities for opposing general managers.

For example, look at the Miami Heat. The entire NBA world knows that they’d trade Tyler Herro for Damian Lillard. That’s fair enough. Lillard is one of the best offensive players in the NBA. Herro…is not. On the other hand, this begs a question, is Herro more generally available?

We’re not sure. On the other hand, we can assume that the Heat would consider trading Herro if there was a trade on the table that upgraded their roster. With that said, a rebuilding team ought to be interested in a young, dynamic guard like Herro. Could the Detroit Pistons be that team?

The Trade Proposal

Miami Heat Receive: F Bojan Bogdanovic, G Killian Hayes
Detroit Pistons Receive: G Tyler Herro

Meanwhile, Miami’s run to the NBA Finals last season couldn’t have inspired confidence in Herro. How could it? Herro wasn’t there for it. The Heat’s young guard was on the injury list throughout the playoffs.

Is that Herro’s fault? Of course not. No NBA player intends to get hurt. With that said, it does raise an uncomfortable question. Are the Heat better without Herro?

We can’t say. It is possible that had Herro been healthy, the Heat would have won an NBA title. With that said, Herro is a volume scorer. Young players in this mold can struggle to contribute to winning. The Heat could feel as though they’d do well to flip Herro for some veterans. Are they getting the right pieces back here?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

We think so. The Heat are filling a couple of holes here. This deal makes their roster more complete. They’re satisfying two needs at the same time with this deal.

Obviously, Bogdanovic is the centerpiece. He’s an elite floor spacing 4 who can create his own shot when need be. If the Heat had rostered him through these playoffs, one wonders if they’d have vanquished the Denver Nuggets. Still, don’t discredit the addition of Hayes, either.

Has his NBA career gotten off to a rocky start? Absolutely. Still, Hayes is a solid defender and a heady playmaker. The Heat could use some point guard depth. Hayes may not be a starter, but coupled with Bogdanovic, this deal is likely to make Miami a better team. What does it do for the Pistons?

Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal

Some Pistons fans won’t like this. Don’t they have enough guards? Sure. With that said, they don’t have a guard like Herro. That’s the point here. He brings a skillset that Detroit doesn’t currently have.

More than anything, we’re talking about shooting. Between Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson, the Pistons have a lot of young guards with star potential – but none of them profile as positive shooters.

So, why not add Herro? The Pistons can get creative with their rotations. Cunningham can spend time at the 3. If the Pistons wanted to go super small, Thompson could even spend time at the 4. This is about landing a guard who can shoot and create his own shot – if Herro is even available in the first place, of course.
