3 Bold Trade Proposals Atlanta Hawks Must Consider

Atlanta Hawks, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

Some NBA teams are going to have quiet summers. Others are going to make waves. Realistically, it depends on how their 2022-23 season went. Teams that felt good about their season may make minimal changes. By contrast, teams that had disappointing years will be candidates to make news.

The Atlanta Hawks had a somewhat disappointing season. This team spent a lot of resources to bring Dejounte Murray into the fold. With that in mind, they indeed hoped to at least win a playoff series.

So, keep an eye on the Hawks this summer. They’ve got a roster full of intriguing players that rival GMs would have an interest in. Here are three trades we think they’ve got to consider.

Trade No. 1 — Move Clint Capela to Dallas Mavericks

Atlanta Hawks Receive: G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., 2027 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Clint Capela

Of every player on the Hawks’ roster, Capela seems like the most likely trade candidate. After all, the Hawks have his protege in wait. Onyeka Onkongwu has appeared ready to take over starting duties. Meanwhile, Capela is still a fantastic defensive big and highly efficient pick-and-roll finisher.

Perhaps that’s why the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly interested in him. This team could badly use a defensive anchor. Capela fits the bill. This is a good return for him.

The Hawks get a good movement shooter that they need in Hardaway Jr. and an unprotected first-round pick. With that said the Hawks have been rumored to be interested in a bigger fish. Here’s a deal that has them landing one.

Trade No. 2 — Atlanta Hawks Acquire Pascal Siakam

Toronto Raptors Receive: F De’Andre Hunter, G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., F Jalen Johnson, 2024 First-Round Pick (SAC via ATL), 2027 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2029 First-Round Pick (ATL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Clint Capela
Atlanta Hawks Receive: F/C Pascal Siakam

You’ve seen the Hawks linked to Siakam before. In all likelihood, you’ve seen it on this very website. It just makes sense. Trae Young is an elite playmaker, but he’s a poor defensive player. With that in mind, the Hawks need to surround him with as many good defenders as they can.

Siakam is one of the best two-way wings in the NBA. He’d also ease Young’s playmaking burden. Siakam is a great acquisition for the Hawks, and that’s why they’re heavily expected to be targeting him.

Meanwhile, this deal makes sense for everyone else too. The Raptors get two intriguing young players and three unprotected first-round picks, and the Mavericks get their defensive anchor. Assuming, of course, that the Hawks want to keep Young in the first place.

Trade No. 3 — Brooklyn Nets End Trae Young Era?

Brooklyn Nets Receive: G Trae Young
Atlanta Hawks Receive: F/C Ben Simmons, 2025 First-Round Pick (PHX via BKN), 2027 First-Round Pick (PHI via BKN), 2029 First-Round Pick (DAL via BKN), 2030 First-Round Pick (BKN)

Could the Hawks really move Young this summer? We’re not sure. For a while, they were heavily rumored to be considering it. Recently, those rompers have died down.

Does that mean they’re dead? No. Any reason the Hawks would have to trade Young would still exist. If they’re worried about his defense or his locker room presence, it could be something they’d consider. This deal with the Brooklyn Nets would probably make them think twice.

The Hawks are receiving four unprotected first-round picks here. Meanwhile, by ceding full-time point guard duties to Dejounte Murray, the Hawks could stay relevant while acquiring those assets. If they want to make major changes, this would be a huge one.
