The Charlotte Hornets made a bold decision this summer. Brandon Miller is a good prospect. Nobody is denying that. At 6’9, his ability to shoot should make him a valuable NBA player.
Still, most general managers would not have taken him second overall. Scoot Henderson was expected to be selected in that spot. By choosing Miller, the Hornets went against the grain.
If anything, it was a vote of confidence for LaMelo Ball. Fair enough. With that said, the Hornets still have space for another point guard on this roster. Could they send Gordon Hayward to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Mike Conley?
The Trade Proposal
Charlotte Hornets Receive: G Mike Conley
Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: F Gordon Hayward
The Timberwolves made a bold decision last summer. Rudy Gobert is a good NBA player. Actually, he’s a great one. This is one of the best defensive big men in the NBA.
Still, most general managers would not have paired him with Karl-Anthony Towns. The league is generally moving away from big men. The Timberwolves decided to start two of them.

That decision hasn’t necessarily panned out. The Wolves acquired Gobert to offset Towns’ deficiencies as a rim protector. Unfortunately, he had an even more difficult time guarding the perimeter. Does acquiring Hayward do anything to mitigate those issues?
Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
Nope. The Wolves have created a dilemma for themselves. If they’re going to solve it, they’ll probably have to trade Towns. By now, Gobert is not going net them the type of return that they sent out to get him.
Let’s assume they’re not looking to trade Towns. If not, the Wolves need to field the best team they can next season. Does this deal make them better?

It’s likely to do exactly that. Conley is aging – it wouldn’t be a surprise if his production fell off next season. Meanwhile, Hayward is at a stage in his career where he should be more reliable. Should the Hornets part with him?
Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
The Hornets have a few reasons for doing this deal. Firstly it’s been rumored that Hayward wants a change. That’s reason enough to move him. If Hayward is unhappy, the Hornets should find him a new home.
Meanwhile, they’re also clearing the lane for Brandon Miller. They play the same position. With Hayward out of the way, Miller can start at the 3 for this team.

Finally, the Hornets could use a veteran backup point guard. Even at his age, Conley is equipped for that role. This is the type of swap that ought to benefit both teams. In other words, there’s nothing bold about it.
