One NBA writer is proposing that the Portland Trail Blazers and Brooklyn Nets make a blockbuster trade centered around Spencer Dinwiddie and Anfernee Simons. Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report proposed that the Nets trade Dinwiddie and a 2027 first-round pick to the Blazers for Simons.
“Anfernee Simons just turned 24 and proved himself as an efficient 20-point scorer this past season, but his position in the Blazers’ backcourt pecking order is uncertain with Scoot Henderson on board and Shaedon Sharpe right there with him,” Hughes wrote. “The other issue with Simons is that he makes the possible acquisition of Tyler Herro from the Miami Heat an apparent nonstarter in a hypothetical Damian Lillard trade.
“Even Dinwiddie might fetch a protected first-rounder at the 2024 deadline. If the Blazers are truly starting fresh, positional gluts shouldn’t matter. They need to be in asset-accumulation mode. In Simons, Brooklyn gets someone who fits its younger timeline and can share creation duties with Mikal Bridges and his rapidly expanding game.”
Damian Lillard has requested a trade from the Blazers and wants to get traded to the Miami Heat. If Portland trades Lillard, the franchise will be in NBA rebuild mode.
NBA TRADE, NEWS & RUMORS: Spencer Dinwiddie, Anfernee Simons, Portland Trail Blazers & Brooklyn Nets Updates
Simons is better suited to play somewhere else since the Blazers have Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. The youngster averaged 21.1 points last season while shooting 44.7% from the field, 37.7% from beyond the arc and 89.4% from the free-throw line. Simons could be the starting point guard in Brooklyn and lead the offense alongside Mikal Bridges.
As for Dinwiddie, he has one year left on his contract, so the Blazers would make this trade to clear NBA cap space in the summer of 2024. Dinwiddie averaged 17.3 points last season with the Dallas Mavericks and Nets.
