Everybody needs a Plan B. It’s never wise to put all of your eggs in one basket. The same holds true for NBA teams. They may have every intention of acquiring a certain player. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they will.
For example, look at the Los Angeles Clippers. It seems like they intend on pursuing James Harden this summer. Will they manage to land him?
We’re not sure. The Clippers might. On the other hand, if they don’t, they’ll have to look to a Plan B. How about Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls?

Let’s hope the Chicago Bulls have a Plan B. Plan A is going quite poorly. The plan was to compete with their current core. The Bulls sunk assets into putting Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic together. That might have been a mistake.
After all, they fell very short of expectations this season. What happened here? Why didn’t the Bulls work out? Well, the fit here is poor.

The combined defense between these three is weak. They’re all ball-dominant. The Bulls are a cautionary tale – you can’t just throw talent together. It has to fit. Does LaVine fit with the rest of the Clippers?
Why The Los Angeles Clippers Do The Deal
It may not be a perfect fit. The Clippers need a point guard. Is LaVine a point guard? Not exactly. LaVine tends to pursue his own shot before looking to set up a teammate. So, what is it that we’ve got the Clippers doing here?
Aggregating talent. We know. We just said that that’s not a viable plan for building a contender. Well, there are no hard and fast rules in the NBA. It depends on how much talent you’ve got.

This would be a whole lot of talent. LaVine is the best player on the Bulls. He’d be an overqualified third option on the Clippers. This deal gives them a better chance at competing for the title. What does it do for the Bulls?
Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
For the Bulls, this is about preparing for the future. We’re assuming it’s not the only move they’d make this summer. If the Bulls make this trade, they might as well trade DeRozan. They just extended Vucevic, but when those trade restrictions lift, they should trade him too.
This is about rebuilding from the ground up. The Bulls are heading nowhere fast. It’s time for them to make some radical changes.

This would count as a radical change. It’s also got the Bulls landing two first-round picks, two swaps, and two intriguing young players. All told, that should be enough for them to part with LaVine. Even if that was never their Plan A.
