It’s hard to believe Christian Wood hasn’t found an NBA home yet. Isn’t it? Maybe? Wood is a strong offensive player. This is a big man who can space the floor, and finish pick-and-rolls with as much efficiency as anybody.
Unfortunately, he struggles on the defensive end of the floor. Wood is a bit too small to guard big men, and he’s not quite quick enough to guard wings. At times, he’s put forth a questionable effort as well.
So, Wood is a flawed player. He still belongs on an NBA roster. Recently, it’s been reported that the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers could work out a sign-and-trade that sends Wood to Los Angeles. Here’s how we think it might look.
The Trade Proposal
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F/C Jarred Vanderbilt
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: F/C Christian Wood, 2027 First-Round Pick
In fact, Wood has had several NBA homes. He got his start with the Philadelphia 76ers. At that time, they were in the midst of The Process. Hardly anybody stuck there – we can’t blame Wood.
When he landed with the Detroit Pistons, he appeared to be breaking out. Wood played like a star in Detroit. For whatever reason, they let him walk to the Houston Rockets anyway.

In time, the Rockets would trade Wood to the Mavericks. Now, the Mavericks are willing to let him walk. Make no mistake: this is a complicated player with flaws. Should the Lakers take a risk on him?
Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Here’s the key question: do the Lakers need offense or defense more? After all, Vanderbilt is a dynamic defender. He also provides significantly less on offense than Wood. Which should the Lakers prefer?
We’ll go with offense. Anthony Davis is among the most consistent defensive anchors in the NBA. In some respects, Vanderbilt is superfluous in LA.

Especially considering that Davis is an inconsistent shooter. With that in mind, adding Wood’s spacing is especially helpful. Meanwhile, we’ve all seen that LeBron James thrives with as much spacing as a team can find him. Shouldn’t the same be true for Luka Doncic?
Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Sure. On the other hand, the Mavericks don’t have an Anthony Davis. This team needs more defensive acumen. From that perspective, Vanderbilt would be a large upgrade over Wood. This is a multi-positional defender who plays hard for every second that he’s on the floor.
He’s also a surprisingly adept connective passer. Vanderbilt may not be a primary playmaker, but he keeps the offense humming.

Meanwhile, and perhaps most importantly, the bridge seems to be burned with Wood. It’s obviously not working out between this player and organization. With that in mind, getting anything for him is valuable for the Mavericks. Even if they’re helping him find a new home.
