When an NBA team drafts a player, they hope it’ll work out for the best. It doesn’t always go that way. Perhaps a player isn’t what they expected. Alternatively, the team may simply have built a roster that doesn’t suit them. Either way, that relationship can end prematurely.
So far, the Chicago Bulls probably aren’t happy with Patrick Williams. He’s looked good when healthy, but injuries have kept him on the shelf far too often.
Meanwhile, Jalen Suggs of the Orlando Magic hasn’t necessarily worked out either. He’s flashed potential, but his offensive game needs development. Now, the Magic have a slew of point guards who they may prioritize over him. Could they send him to the Bulls?
The Trade Proposal
Orlando Magic Receive: F Patrick Williams
Chicago Bulls Receive: G Jalen Suggs, G Devin Cannady
Of course, when a team signs a player, they’re hoping that will work out too. Once again, that isn’t always the case. Several factors can sway a signing negatively. Injuries may be the most prominent one.
If a player can’t stay healthy, what value can they offer? Nobody should blame professional athletes for getting injured – they don’t intend to get hurt. Still, it does leave their team in an unfortunate position.
NBA TRADES, NEWS & RUMORS: Jalen Suggs, Chicago Bulls & Orlando Magic Updates
Just ask the Bulls about Lonzo Ball. He can’t stay on the floor. By now, the Bulls must be making contingency plans. Is Suggs a good one?
Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
We gave away the ending. The Bulls do this deal to replace Lonzo Ball. In fact, Suggs is a similar player in some respects. He’s a dynamic defender with strong floor vision. Of course, there’s a large, fundamental difference between them as well.
Ball is an elite floor spacer. Suggs, so far, is a poor shooter. In fact, that’s mainly what’s held his young career back to this point.

This is still a good gamble for Chicago. Ball was once a poor shooter – Suggs can improve. In the meantime, they’ll be pairing him with a stretch big man in Vucevic. The Bulls can make this work. Can the Magic?
Why The Orlando Magic Do The Deal
The Magic are also doing this deal to replace an oft-injured player. Surely, they’re losing faith in Jonathan Isaac by now. He’s rarely available to play basketball. Orlando should be operating under the assumption that Isaac isn’t part of their future.
In fact, Williams looks like an Ironman compared to Isaac. Yes, he’s routinely injured, but there is much more reason to have faith in him.

When healthy, he’s a better shooter than Isaac as well. Williams may be a better complement to playmaking wings like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Williams’ ability to guard multiple positions will make life easier for everyone on this roster. If everything works out, that is.
