The Golden State Warriors could pursue Rudy Gay if the veteran small forward gets waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to NBA insider Anthony Slater of The Athletic. The Warriors have been linked to Gay in the past.

“Have you seen the Thunder’s roster? After a recent trade with Atlanta to grab Usman Garuba, TyTy Washington and Rudy Gay, Oklahoma City is overcommitted on guaranteed roster slots,” Slater wrote. “Somebody has to shake loose before the start of the season. Gay has $6.5 million left on an expiring deal and doesn’t fit the Thunder’s timeline. He seems like a cut candidate and is someone the Warriors have had interest in the past. He’s a name to monitor.”

Gay played for the Utah Jazz last season. He averaged 5.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 56 games while shooting 38.0% from the field, 25.4% from beyond the arc and 85.7% from the free-throw line.

The 36-year-old Gay has career averages of 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 1,120 games with the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Jazz. He was teammates with Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson on the 2014 FIBA World Cup Team.

The Thunder are not expected to keep Gay, who turns 37 in August. It will be interesting to see if the UConn product signs with the Warriors, who have won four championships and played in six NBA Finals in the Curry-Thompson-Draymond Green era.

Golden State traded Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards for Chris Paul this summer. The franchise also signed Cory Joseph and re-signed Green in free agency.

The Warriors are expected to start Paul, Curry, Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Green next season, although Paul could come off the bench and be the Dubs’ new Sixth Man.
