Pelicans Trade For Celtics’ Robert Williams III In Bold Scenario

Robert Williams III, New Orleans Pelicans, Boston Celtics, NBA Trade Rumors

Size will always be an asset in the NBA. Being tall will always give a player an advantage. With that said, in today’s game, teams value mobility in big men. Yes, it still helps to be tall, but if you can move your feet quickly while doing it, that’s even better.

Apparently, the New Orleans Pelicans are well away. Jonas Valanciunas is a giant of a human being. Recently, it’s been suggested that they’d like to replace him anyway.

That makes sense. Valanciunas is talented, but his limited mobility makes it difficult for him to defend in certain situations. The Pelicans may be looking for a defensive big that’s more difficult to solve. How about Robert Williams III of the Boston Celtics?

The Trade Proposal

Boston Celtics Receive: G Kira Lewis Jr., G Jose Alvarado, 2024 First-Round Pick (LAL via NOP)
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: C Robert Williams III

Durability will always be an asset in the NBA as well. In fact, some would argue that it’s the most valuable one. They’ve got a case. If a player can’t stay on the floor, how valuable can he really be? Teams need players who are able to play.

That’s been an issue for the Pelicans in recent years. Zion Williamson struggles mightily with his health. This season, Brandon Ingram dealt with some injuries as well.

Of course, Williams III has had his own share of durability issues. This is another player who struggles to stay on the basketball floor. Should the Pelicans really acquire him?

Why The New Orleans Pelicans Do The Deal

Well, the Pelicans are in for a penny. Perhaps they should go in for a pound. Would this team be hinging its entire fate on injury luck following this deal? Yes. They’d have one of the best rosters in the NBA and one of the least durable.

Here’s the thing: they’d have one of the best rosters in the NBA. Williams III is a perfect complement to Williamson in the frontcourt. His elite defensive versatility should cover for Williamson’s limitations on that end of the floor.

This is a risk. Sometimes, you’ve got to take risks to succeed. If the Pelicans want a switchable defensive anchor at the 5 spot, Williams III is an ideal target. Should the Celtics really part with him?

Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal

Boston does this deal for a few small reasons. In the aggregate, they create a large incentive. Firstly, they’ll have to make a decision on Williams III’s future soon. Will they be willing to invest in such an injury-prone player? If not, it could be time to move on.

Meanwhile, taking a flier on Lewis Jr. doesn’t hurt. The Celtics could use a point guard, and he’s flashed some potential in the NBA. Of course, Alvarado is the main draw from that perspective.

Still, all told, landing an unprotected first-round pick is the most important part of this deal. Boston could use that asset to make another trade at the deadline.Even if it means parting with one of the most mobile big men in the NBA.
