Spurs Trade For Knicks’ Isaiah Hartenstein In Bold Scenario

Victor Wembanyama’s first NBA Summer League performance was a little disappointing. Predictably, we overreacted.

In his second game, Wembanyama showed the world what he was capable of. In all likelihood, the San Antonio Spurs already knew.

After all, they selected him with the first overall pick. This is a generational prospect. The Spurs surely know that Wembanyama will need some time to adjust to life in the NBA.

Playing alongside another big man may help ease that adjustment period. Wembanyama may need to add some bulk to his frame before he’s ready to play the 5 on a full-time basis. Could that 5 be Isaiah Hartenstein of the New York Knicks?

The Trade Proposal

New York Knicks Receive: F/C Zach Collins
San Antonio Spurs Receive: C Isaiah Hartenstein

In fact, Wembanyama was never going to immediately live up to expectations. They are simply too high. The best prospect in sports history. Real analysts have given Wembanyama this title. Who could possibly make good on that kind of promise on day one?

Wembanyama may be that type of player. He could change basketball. With that said, he’s not going to do it overnight.

At the moment, his slight frame is going to cause him problems. Wembanyama can be physically overwhelmed. With that in mind, the Spurs have a substantial incentive to land a big man this summer. Is Hartenstein the right choice?

Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal

We think so. After all, the Spurs shouldn’t just go get any big man. They need someone who will suit their needs, and someone who will fit their system. Hartenstein seems like the right call.

Head coach Gregg Popovich is known to lean into front-court passing. He wants to run a motion offense that gets everybody involved. Hartenstein’s floor vision makes him a good fit for the job.

He’s also a solid defender who’s willing to wrestle on the low block. That’s exactly the work the Spurs are hoping to shield Wembanyama from. All told, this acquisition gives the Spurs the size they need in the frontcourt without jeopardizing their offensive system. What does it do for the Knicks?

Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal

For the Knicks, this is about diversification. They’ve got two starting caliber big men that can’t co-exist. Hartenstein does not share the floor with Mitchell Robinson. Meanwhile, if they’re choosing between the two, they’re choosing Robinson. He’s one of the best defensive big men in the NBA.

By contrast, Collins is a combo big. He can share the floor with Robinson for spells. Collins can space the floor, and defend in space a little.

He’s simply a better fit for this roster. Meanwhile, Collins is still young enough to improve. If he can hit another gear in his NBA career, the Knicks will be glad to acquire him. Even if they’re helping Victor Wembanyama ease into NBA life.
