Life comes at you quickly in the NBA. Yesterday’s future star is today’s long-term reserve. Fortunes change on a whim. Sometimes, they can change back.
Collin Sexton of the Utah Jazz has to be hoping for some change. At one time, he was seen as a future star. Now, the perception around him has changed.
Injuries are to blame. Sexton got hurt, and he hasn’t quite been the same since. Still, he showed flashes of his old self in 2022-23.Could the Jazz trade him to the Miami Heat anyway?
The Trade Proposal
Utah Jazz Receive: G/F Duncan Robinson, 2027 First-Round Pick (Top-10 Protected – MIA)
Miami Heat Receive: G Collin Sexton
If you need evidence of the speed of NBA life, look at the Portland Trail Blazers. Just recently, this team had a sense of security. They had their franchise player in Damian Lillard. Now, Lillard has requested a trade.
He’s very specific in his preferences. Lillard wants to join the Miami Heat. Apparently, he won’t accept a move to any other franchise.

Finding a way to send him to Miami may be easier said than done. The Heat don’t have a lot of assets. They don’t necessarily have the very most competitive offer to make the Blazers. Could they settle for Sexton instead?
Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
Well, Sexton is obviously a downgrade from Lillard. He hardly qualifies as a replacement. After all, Lillard has been one of the best offensive players in the NBA for a long time. Realistically, Sexton has one season under his belt where he played like a star – and that was before his injury.
At the same time, that’s why the Heat are paying such a small price here. They can afford to part with Robinson – Miami will find a shooting specialist on the margins. This team could use a point guard who can create offense in the half court.

Sexton may still be that guy. If he regains his form on the Heat, this could be a steal for a team that just advanced to the NBA Finals. Should the Jazz really help them improve?
Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
It’s a little difficult to determine where the Jazz are heading. This team was supposed to tank for Victor Wembanyama in 2022-23. Instead, they were somewhat competitive. As a result, they’ll be adding Keyonte George and Taylor Hendricks as their top rookies next season.
That’s fine. Utah doesn’t have to tank to the bottom. They’ve got a solid roster, and one of the most impressive collections of draft capital in the NBA.

Why not make that collection a little more impressive? The Jazz didn’t prominently feature Sexton last season. If they don’t intend on making him a cornerstone, flipping him for a protected first-round pick makes good sense. Even if it requires some quick decision-making.
