Spurs Trade For Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns In Bold Scenario

Karl-Anthony Towns, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, NBA Trade Rumors

The game of basketball is played on both sides of the court. Offense counts, and so does defense. The best teams in the NBA know this. They’re balanced. A contending team typically has some offensive stars and some elite defensive players.

The San Antonio Spurs are hoping to have landed both at the same time. If Victor Wembanyama meets his potential, he’ll anchor a defense and lead an offense at the same time. With that said, he may not be ready for that kind of role on day one.

Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves can carry an offense. He can’t seem to anchor a defense. That’s held his Timberwolves back for years now. Could they send Towns to the Spurs as a result?

The Trade Proposal

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G/F Keldon Johnson, F Doug McDermott, 2025 First-Round Pick (ATL via SAS), 2027 First-Round Pick (ATL via SAS), 2028 First-Round Pick (SAS)
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F/C Karl-Anthony Towns

Of course, it isn’t only Spurs fans that are excited about Wembanyama. The entire NBA world will be watching him. In fact, Wembanyama is the most anticipated NBA prospect since LeBron James.

There was no mystery about who would be the number one pick. Now, it’s a matter of whether Wembanyama can live up to expectations. Has Karl-Anthony Towns done the same? This is another former number-one pick. Whether Towns has justified that selection is a matter of debate.

On the one hand, he’s certainly produced like a top pick. Unfortunately, that hasn’t translated to team success for the Wolves. Now, they’re allegedly considering moving on from Towns. Is this the right return?

Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal

In fact, the Timberwolves made a major acquisition last summer with Towns in mind. They acquired Rudy Gobert in an effort to offset Towns’ defensive limitations. It hasn’t looked great. Towns may struggle to guard the interior. Unfortunately, he’s even worse for wear when guarding the perimeter.

Perhaps this pairing doesn’t work. If the Timberwolves agree, they should move Towns. In return, they should be seeking a young player who compliments Anthony Edwards in addition to some draft capital.

Keldon Johnson could be that player. This is a solid offensive wing who can create his own shot. He and Edwards would be a good duo, and the Wolves would make up much of the draft capital they lost in acquiring Gobert. Should the Spurs send it to them?

Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal

Towns may struggle to protect the rim. Could the right coach help? If so, the Spurs should be interested. Arguably, Gregg Popovich is the best coach in NBA history. If anyone can improve Towns’ defense, it’s him.

Of course, even if Towns can’t improve on that end, he might be a good acquisition for this team. Wembanyama doesn’t project as the same type of defender as Gobert. He’s got the foot speed to operate as a roamer and block shots from the weak side.

In other words, he may be able to cover for Towns. If he can, the Spurs are landing one of the best offensive big men in NBA history here. They’d be assembling a frontcourt duo that could carry them back to title contention sooner than expected. Between the two, they could be dominant on both ends of the floor.
