One NBA writer has proposed that the New York Knicks acquire Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Andrew Lopez of ESPN is proposing that the Knicks trade Julius Randle, Isaiah Roby, Jericho Sims and three future draft picks to the Timberwolves for Towns, who can be traded starting on July 7.
“When the Timberwolves traded for Rudy Gobert, their war chest of picks was emptied. This is a chance to help replenish it, but it costs them their three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA player in Towns,” Lopez wrote. “For the Knicks, this deal gives them a chance to cash in some of the picks once reserved for a Donovan Mitchell pursuit last summer.”
Towns is one of the top players in the NBA. The three-time All-Star averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season while shooting 49.5% from the field, 36.6% from beyond the arc and 87.4% from the free-throw line. KAT only played in 29 games due to a serious calf injury.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, New York Knicks & Minnesota Timberwolves Updates
In July 2022, Towns signed a four-year, $224.2 million designated veteran player extension with Minnesota. The former Rookie of the Year, who has career averages of 23.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists, will make $36 million next season.
Knicks president Leon Rose has a close relationship with Towns. Rose used to be Towns’ agent when he ran CAA Sports, so it’s possible Towns may be interested in playing for New York.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, New York Knicks & Minnesota Timberwolves Updates
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report is reporting that the Timberwolves could trade Towns this offseason. Rudy Gobert and Towns weren’t a good fit with each other.
“Dealing Gobert will not return anything close to what the Timberwolves paid to Utah,” Pincus wrote. “Other competing executives think Karl-Anthony Towns will be long gone ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. Some even believe Minnesota would jump at an opportunity in the next few weeks.”
Towns played for Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota. He was also born and raised in New Jersey.
