The New York Knicks are going to be a very intriguing team to keep an eye on as the NBA offseason heats up. With free agency right around the corner, teams are gearing up for what is expected to be a wild couple of weeks. One intriguing player to keep an eye on as a Knicks’ trade target is San Antonio Spurs’ sharpshooter Doug McDermott.
McDermott would certainly be an intriguing addition for the Knicks. They need more perimeter shooting and movement off the ball, which is exactly what McDermott would bring to the court.
NBA analyst Bill Simmons floated an intriguing trade idea for McDermott. He has New York trading Evan Fournier heading to the Spurs in exchange for McDermott.
“(San Antonio]) trades for (Evan) Fournier as a (Victor Wembanyama) big brother/mentor,” Simmons suggested. “(They) get a protected first or some other asset for their troubles (maybe Doug McDermott is in the deal too).”

Being able to move on from Fournier would be a good move for the Knicks in and of itself. He simply has not fit in well with the group that New York has put together. McDermott would be a much better supporting cast member for Jalen Brunson to play with.
During the 2022-23 NBA season with the Spurs, McDermott ended up averaging 10.2 points per game to go along with 2.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He shot 45.7 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 41.3 precent of his three-point attempts.

Those numbers show why the Knicks should be interested in acquiring McDermott. His shooting alone from the three-point line would fill a major void. He also wouldn’t cost a lot to bring in via a trade.
Expect to hear a ton of rumors surrounding the Knicks in the coming hours and days. Doug McDermott may not end up being a target, but he would make a ton of sense in New York.
