All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis and the Sacramento Kings could agree to a four-year, $120 million renegotiate-and-extend deal this summer, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
Sabonis is entering the final year of a four-year, $74.9 million contract that is set to pay him $19.4 million in 2023-24. With Harrison Barnes likely to depart in free agency and the Kings trading away Richaun Holmes’ contract while taking back no salary, they could create nearly $35 million in cap space.
“Outright selling a first-round pick for savings, even in this economy, left many league personnel of the mind that Sacramento has a specific move up its sleeve — not just renegotiating and extending All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis for what’s expected to be in the ballpark of four years, $120 million, sources said.”
Sabonis averaged 19.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists for the Kings this past season while shooting 61.5% from the field, 37.3% from beyond the arc, and 74.2% from the free-throw line. He made the All-Star team and the All-NBA third team.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Domantas Sabonis & Sacramento Kings Updates
The Kings won 48 games in 2022-23 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Even though Sacramento lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2023 postseason in seven games, the franchise has a bright future with Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox, Keegan Murray, Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter leading the way.
The Kings acquired Sabonis from the Indiana Pacers in the Tyrese Haliburton trade. While there was initial criticism for the trade, it has thus far proved to be a successful deal with long-term potential for Sacramento.
