Dillon Brooks is seeking a contract in free agency that starts higher than $12.4 million, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. Brooks becomes an unrestricted free agent on June 30. The Memphis Grizzlies don’t plan to bring the forward back.
“Brooks endured a dreadful first-round series against the Lakers and faced considerable criticism for second-seeded Memphis’ failure to get out of the first round, but a belief persists in various corners of the league that the defensive specialist swingman will be seeking a contract in free agency that starts higher than the $12.4 million non-taxpayers’ midlevel exception,” Stein wrote.
Brooks averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists this past season for the Grizzlies while shooting 39.6% from the field, 32.6% from beyond the arc and 77.9% from the free-throw line. Memphis won 51 games in the regular season and was the second seed in the Western Conference.
However, the Grizzlies lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in six games and Brooks didn’t play well. The 27-year-old averaged just 10.5 points while shooting 31.2% from the floor and 23.8% from 3 against the Lakers.

Brooks also talked too much trash to Los Angeles superstar LeBron James, calling the four-time MVP and four-time Finals MVP “old” after the Grizzlies won Game 2 in Memphis.
Brooks is expected to sign with the Houston Rockets this offseason, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. The Rockets have more than $60 million in cap space.
“Small forward Dillon Brooks is expected to sign elsewhere in free agency, where Houston continues to be the destination most often mentioned for Brooks by league personnel,” Fischer wrote.
