Center Naz Reid has agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Reid would have become an unrestricted free agent on June 30 if he and the Timberwolves didn’t agree to an extension.

Reid averaged 11.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists this past season for the Timberwolves while shooting 53.7% from the floor, 34.6% from beyond the arc and 67.7% from the free-throw line. He suffered a left wrist injury on March 29 against the Phoenix Suns and underwent season-ending surgery.

Without Reid, the Timberwolves lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in five games.

Reid has career averages of 10.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists. The Los Angeles Lakers were going to pursue the LSU product had he not agreed to an extension with the Timberwolves, sources told NBA Analysis Network.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Naz Reid & Minnesota Timberwolves Updates

Minnesota won 42 games in 2022-23. All-Stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert weren’t a good fit with each other and some people in NBA circles believe the Timberwolves could trade Towns this offseason. In July 2022, KAT signed a massive four-year, $224.2 million designated veteran player extension with Minnesota.

“Other competing executives think Karl-Anthony Towns will be long gone ahead of the 2024-25 campaign,” Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report wrote. “Some even believe Minnesota would jump at an opportunity in the next few weeks.”

While Towns is a better player than Gobert, the Timberwolves gave up a lot of draft picks to acquire Gobert from the Utah Jazz, so moving on from him would be a disaster optics-wise.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Naz Reid & Minnesota Timberwolves Updates

Towns has career averages of 23.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He will make $36 million next season. It will certainly be interesting to see if the Timberwolves trade the former No. 1 overall pick this summer or run it back next season.
