For most teams, the NBA Draft is about the future. Still, some teams use it to improve their current situation. 

After all, there are usually trades available. Draft night is typically one of the busiest nights of the season. The 2023 draft was no exception. 

The Dallas Mavericks were certainly active. Yes, they selected Derrick Lively II. He was a good selection. He also wasn’t the only defensive big man that the Mavericks brought into the fold. 

The Mavericks acquired Richaun Holmes on draft night. They also managed to clear Davis Bertans’ salary.

Now, the team has a little cap space to play with this summer with some experts even suggesting they could unlock the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception.
