The Sacramento Kings have mulled over a potential extension offer for center Domantas Sabonis, according to NBA insider James Ham. Sabonis is entering the final year of a four-year, $74.9 million contract that is set to pay him $19.4 million in 2023-24.

“According to a league source, the Kings have mulled over a potential extension offer for All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis this summer, but they need cap space in order to accomplish that,” Ham wrote.

As Ham reported, the Kings could utilize a creative approach by generating cap space to increase Sabonis’ salary for the upcoming season while working out an extension, similar to how Myles Turner received a midseason raise from the Indiana Pacers.

The new CBA should only help the Kings work something out with Sabonis, given they can offer a 140 percent raise on his 2023-24 salary instead of being limited to the 120 percent threshold from the prior agreement. By creating cap space, Sacramento can raise his salary and factor that into the raise on his contract extension.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Domantas Sabonis & Sacramento Kings Updates

Regardless of what the Kings work out with Sabonis, he is well deserving of a major raise. He averaged 19.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists for the Kings this past season while shooting 61.5% from the field, 37.3% from beyond the arc, and 74.2% from the free-throw line. He made the All-Star team and the All-NBA third team.

The Kings won 48 games and made the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Sacramento lost to the Golden State Warriors in the first round in seven games. Sabonis was an integral part of that success and projects as being so going forward.

The Kings acquired Sabonis from the Indiana Pacers in the Tyrese Haliburton trade. While there was initial criticism for the trade, it proved to be a successful deal with long-term potential.
