The Washington Wizards are trading point guard Chris Paul to the Golden State Warriors for shooting guard Jordan Poole, according to multiple NBA reports.
The Wizards acquired Paul from the Phoenix Suns in the blockbuster Bradley Beal trade. CP3 was never going to stay with Washington since the franchise is in rebuild mode under new president Michael Winger.
Paul is now teammates with two-time MVP Stephen Curry, All-Star shooting guard Klay Thompson and former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green, three players he’s had many battles with. The future Hall of Famer averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists this past season for the Suns, who lost to the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals in six games.
Paul, 38, has a partially guaranteed contract for next season.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Chris Paul, Jordan Poole, Washington Wizards & Golden State Warriors Updates
Poole signed a four-year, $128 million extension with the Warriors in October 2022. The extension kicks in next season. The Michigan product averaged a career-high 20.4 points for the Warriors this past season while shooting 43.0% from the field, 33.6% from beyond the arc and 87.0% from the free-throw line.
However, Poole wasn’t able to carry over his regular-season success to the postseason. In 13 playoff games versus the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers, Poole averaged 10.3 points while shooting an inefficient 34.1% overall and 25.4% from 3-point range.
The Warriors, who won the championship last season over the Boston Celtics, lost to the Lakers in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals in six games, with Poole averaging just 8.3 points in the series.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Chris Paul, Jordan Poole, Washington Wizards & Golden State Warriors Updates
The Los Angeles Clippers were interested in trading for Paul, while the Lakers were hoping the Wizards would waive the veteran so they could sign him as an unrestricted free agent. Now, both LA teams will have to face Paul several times in the regular season since the Warriors, Clippers and Lakers are all in the same division.
