In an era where NBA stars are constantly on the move, Damian Lillard has refused to leave the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite rumors swirling every summer, the All-Star point guard has remained committed to the team that drafted him.
For years, people around the league have applauded Lillard for his loyalty, but some are starting to turn on him. He’s made it clear that he wants the front office to improve the roster, and he has no interest in being part of a youth movement.
During a recent appearance on the Five on the Floor podcast, ESPN’s Bobby Marks gave his thoughts on Lillard remaining in Portland. He feels that the seven-time All-Star should request a trade and used Jimmy Butler as an example of it working out for a disgruntled star.
“I don’t want to hear it anymore on these shows,” Marks said. “Either the roster is good enough and you’re content… or go in there and ask to be traded. Like a lot of players have done. Jimmy did it, and it worked out better for him. With Lillard, if it’s not now, when is it?”

By the time next season starts, Lillard will 33-years-old. He only has so many years left at his peak, limiting his window to compete for a championship. After failing to make the playoffs last season, it’s clear that the Blazers aren’t close to being a legitimate title threat.
If Portland was going to consider a Lillard trade, now would be the time to do it. They have a roster filled with young talent, along with the third pick in the NBA Draft. Moving Lillard for a haul would allow them to be a step ahead in a full rebuild.

Leading up to the draft, the Blazers are looking to package the third pick in a win-now move to please Lillard. Judging by how things have played out this far, Portland isn’t going to trade their franchise player until he is the one who wants out.
