NBA insider Matt Moore believes the Memphis Grizzlies will trade point guard Tyus Jones this offseason.

Jones signed a two-year, $29 million contract with the Grizzlies in July 2022. He’ll make $14 million next season and become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024.

The 27-year-old Jones averaged 10.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists this past season while shooting 43.8% from the field, 37.1% from beyond the arc and 80.0% from the free-throw line. The Duke product started 22 games when All-Star Ja Morant was injured and suspended.

The Grizzlies won 51 games in 2022-23. They were the second seed in the Western Conference and many people picked them to reach the conference finals. However, Memphis lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in six games.

Jones averaged 4.5 points and 3.7 assists in the Lakers series. Some NBA execs believe the Minnesota native wants to get traded by Memphis and be a starter somewhere. Even though Morant will miss the first 25 games of the 2023-24 season due to a suspension, Jones will go back to being a reserve player once Morant’s suspension is over.

Jones has career averages of 6.8 points and 3.9 assists with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Grizzlies. It will be interesting to see if he gets traded this offseason.

Morant has been suspended by the NBA for 25 games for showing a gun on an IG Live video for a second time. He was suspended for eight games in March after the first incident.

Morant’s suspension begins immediately and will remain in effect through the first 25 games of the 2023-24 regular season. The Murray State product will have to adhere to certain conditions before being reinstated and is ineligible to participate in any public league or team activities, including preseason games, during the course of his suspension.
