One NBA writer is proposing that the San Antonio Spurs acquire Malcolm Brogdon from the Boston Celtics this offseason.
Our own James Piercey of NBA Analysis Network proposed that the Spurs send Doug McDermott, Tre Jones, and a first-round pick in 2025 to the Celtics for Brogdon, who won the 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year Award. With a need to add facilitation and more shooting, Boston would achieve both.
“The Celtics have a few motivations here,” Piercey wrote. “Firstly, this team could use a pure point guard. Jones is one, and Brogdon isn’t. Talent-wise, this is a clear downgrade. Still, the Celtics could use a guard like Jones, who is willing to play the role of organizer. Of course, there’s that talent downgrade.”
“Obviously, the Celtics wouldn’t swap Jones for Brogdon. More than anything, the Celtics do this for the unprotected first-round pick that they’re landing here,” Piercey explained. “Still, McDermott is a solid rotation player in his own right. The Celtics are adding one of the best shooters in the NBA here.”
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Malcolm Brogdon, Boston Celtics & San Antonio Spurs Updates
The Spurs need to upgrade at the point guard position with Victor Wembanyama being brought into the fold using the 1st pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Brogdon’s ability to serve as a combo guard could be particularly intriguing as an early career fit.
“The Spurs do this deal for that big talent upgrade we’d mentioned. Besides, Brogdon isn’t some kind of volume-scoring blackhole,” Piercey explained. “He’s a pure combo guard. This is a player that will complement Victor Wembanyama. That’s really all that matters here. Let’s be realistic. Every decision the Spurs make over the next few years will be with the French phenom in mind.”
Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 67 games this season while shooting 48.4% from the field, 44.4% from beyond the arc and 87.0% from the free-throw line. The 2016-17 Rookie of the Year, Brogdon signed a two-year, $85 million contract extension with the Indiana Pacers in October 2021. He’ll make $22.5 million next season.
