One NBA writer believes Boston Celtics power forward Grant Williams can help the San Antonio Spurs next season.
Matt Guzman of Sports Illustrated recently argued why the Spurs should consider signing Williams this offseason.
“Instead of looking for a 10-year veteran, what about a still-young, up-and-coming player? One that has playoff experience, but won’t break the bank for a team in search of additional help,” Guzman wrote. “Celtics power forward Grant Williams could be that player for the Spurs, and what he brings would be arguably hard to refuse for the young team.
“Last season, Williams proved once again his ability to defend some of the league’s top defenders. He finished with a top-25 defensive rating in the league, while shooting just shy of 40 percent from behind the arc. His shooting would be a big boost to the Spurs’ offense, especially on kick-out passes while Victor Wembanyama draws attention in the paint.”

Williams averaged 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists for the Celtics this season while shooting 45.4% from the field, 39.5% from beyond the arc and 77.0% from the free-throw line in 79 games. The 24-year-old helped Boston win 57 games in the regular season.
As a restricted free agent, Williams can either re-sign with the Celtics or sign an offer sheet with another team. Boston can match any offer sheet Williams signs as long as it comes within 48 hours.
The Celtics lost to the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals in seven games. Williams averaged 5.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in the 2023 playoffs versus the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers and Heat.
