Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal

Well, there’s a meaningful difference between these teams. The Knicks play in the biggest market in the NBA, and the Jazz play in one of the smallest.

Of course, some small market teams refuse to tank. They’ll argue that they can’t afford multiple seasons of losing. Sure. On the other hand, a team like the Knicks can hope to attract free agents if they don’t build through the draft.

The Jazz are not a free-agent destination. This team is solid, but it isn’t great – and it’s hard to imagine how they’ll get better.

Unless, of course, they’re willing to build through the draft. If so, this deal would help them. They’re landing three unprotected first-round picks along with a promising young player in Toppin.

For the Jazz, this is an opportunity to rebuild properly.
