A contending NBA team needs a lot of pieces to compete. Perhaps none are more important than a primary playmaker.
Sure, other archetypes are valuable. You need 3-and-D wings. Ideally, you’ve got a big man who can anchor your defense. Still, nothing supersedes a primary playmaker.
The Atlanta Hawks have one. Trae Young is a player with warts. He’s a poor defender. On the other hand, he is one of the best offensive engines in the NBA.
Meanwhile, LeBron James is one of the best playmakers of all time. With that said, he’s slowing down.
Don’t be surprised if James transitions into more of a secondary role next season.
Could he do so alongside Young?
