Fred VanVleet can become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he declines his 2023-24 player option with the Toronto Raptors. If the NBA champion hits free agency, the Orlando Magic could make a run at him, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
“[Orlando] has cap space, they can sign a point guard, you’ve heard the [Fred VanVleet] rumors.”
VanVleet’s player option for next season is worth $22.8 million. The Wichita State product signed a four-year, $85 million contract with the Raptors in November 2020.
VanVleet, who helped the Raptors win the 2019 championship over Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors in six games, averaged 19.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists this season while shooting 39.3% from the field, 34.2% from beyond the arc and 89.8% from the free-throw line. The Illinois native had 10 double-doubles and one triple-double in 69 games.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Fred VanVleet, Toronto Raptors & Orlando Magic Updates
The Raptors lost to the Chicago Bulls in the 9-10 play-in game at home and didn’t qualify for the postseason. During his end-of-the-season press conference, VanVleet told reporters that he wouldn’t rush into a decision about his future. The Raptors and head coach Nick Nurse parted ways after the season ended, so they are in need of a new coach.
“I know we’re very dramatic around here,” VanVleet said. “It’s a tough way to go out. Not too much rush to jump into a decision about opting out. It will take some time.”
The Magic, who are coached by Jamahl Mosley, won only 34 games this season. However, they have a bright future with 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, small forward Franz Wagner, center Wendell Carter Jr. and guard Markelle Fultz leading the way. If Orlando adds VanVleet, the team could possibly make the playoffs next season for the first time since 2020.
