One name has dominated the 2023 NBA Draft narrative for the better part of a year: Victor Wembanyama. On May 16, the league will determine which team he will play for.

Wembanyama stands at 7-foot-5, with a wingspan that spans nearly eight feet, towering over the rest of the nine players on any given basketball court. All the while, he possesses a unique combination of size and skill.

This year’s NBA Draft lottery is more important than ever before, with a franchise-altering prospect available. Wembanyama is almost guaranteed to be selected by one of the 14 teams that missed the postseason this year.

2023 NBA Draft Lottery Procedure

In accordance with their regular season records, each of the 14 teams that missed this year’s postseason has been assigned odds for the first overall pick.

A 14.0 percent chance exists for each of the three teams with the worst records (Pistons, Rockets, Spurs). There are progressively smaller chances for every team after that, culminating with the New Orleans Pelicans having just a 0.5 percent chance. The No. 5 pick is guaranteed to the Pistons as the team with the worst record.

During the televised broadcast, the drawing will take place in a private room. A lottery machine will be filled with 14 numbered ping-pong balls. There will be four numbers drawn, and the team with the corresponding combination of numbers will be selected first. Second, third, and fourth picks are made using the same process.

The results of this drawing will be placed into envelopes so that they can be read on air during the broadcast.
