The Memphis Grizzlies are headed for an offseason full of changes. Among them will be Dillon Brooks. He is set to reach NBA free agency after a tumultuous season, but he won’t be brought back.
In 73 games, he averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. The main issue was the lack of scoring efficiency, as he shot 39.6 percent from the floor and 32.6 percent from 3-point range. Regardless, he’s a hard-nosed defender who embraces the challenge of the toughest assignment.
There will be teams interested in Brooks’ services. According to Marc Stein, the Detroit Pistons have been mentioned numerous times as a possible suitor for Brooks when he hits the open market.
“It’s obviously early in the offseason for the 22 teams that have already been eliminated — Memphis’ season hasn’t even been over for a week yet — but Detroit has been mentioned to me more than once as a team to watch in terms of potential suitors for unrestricted free agent-to-be Dillon Brooks,” Stein wrote.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Dillon Brooks, Memphis Grizzlies & Detroit Pistons Updates
The Pistons need to add more veteran talent as they build toward playoff contention with Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey next season. With another elite prospect added through the 2023 NBA Draft, bringing in Brooks, in addition, would bring them that much closer to that goal.
Brooks would be a tough fit alongside Ivey and Cunningham, given his inefficient perimeter shooting and desire to play more with the basketball in his hands. Perhaps he could find a helpful role coming off the Pistons’ bench, affording him more responsibility on offense.

The Pistons will have a significant salary cap space during the offseason. Brooks could position himself well to still get a favorable contract by signing with Detroit. For now, they will at least be a key team to keep tabs on as free agency looms.
