Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
One thing feels certain: the partnership between Towns and Rudy Gobert could be short-lived.
For some, it didn’t work in theory. Moving Towns to the 4 was never a recipe for improving their defense. It didn’t work in practice, either.
The Wolves could respond by trading Gobert. On the other hand, he’s unlikely to yield value. By now, he’s seen as being on a net negative contract around the league. Here, they’re opting to get a haul for Towns instead.
It should actually make them a better team, too. Washington gives them the frontcourt versatility to go small. Perhaps more importantly, Rozier is a more fitting second option behind Anthony Edwards.

Throw in two first-round picks and a swap, and the Wolves would have to at least entertain this deal. It might make life simpler for them next season.
