The Heat seem to have a mantra: “If we’re in the playoffs, we’re title contenders”. Perhaps the Mavericks could have heeded that mantra this season. They missed the playoffs.
In fact, it almost appeared as if they did so deliberately. After all, Dallas was on the brink of the play-in tournament.
They started resting players. Ultimately, the league fined them for tanking. We’re not here to cast moral judgment, but unless they strike some major luck in the NBA lottery, they are in a disadvantaged position regarding re-tooling the roster.
While the Mavericks did what they thought was best for their organization, there are some that will naturally look at what other teams decided to do and compare results.
