During Sunday’s NBA playoff action, the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings found themselves in a nail-biting Game 4. Despite a huge blunder in the game’s final moments, the defending champions manage to even up the series.
With roughly 40 seconds to go in the game, Steph Curry called a timeout after being doubled by two Kings’ defenders. The only issue is that Golden State was out of timeouts at the time. This sent Malik Monk to the free-throw line and gave Sacramento possession down four points.
Following this swing, the Kings found themselves with a chance to win the game and take a commanding 3-1 lead. Harrison Barnes got off an open shot attempt but was unable to get it to fall. Golden State avoided disaster and sent the series back to Sacramento for a pivotal Game 5.
After the game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr discussed Curry calling the extra timeout down the stretch. He took full responsibility for the mishap, saying it’s on him to remind his team how many timeouts they have in late-game situations.
“It was 100 percent my fault. I knew we didn’t have any timeouts left… That’s on me. I’ve gotta remind the guys we don’t have any timeouts.”

This blunder had the chance to be catastrophic, but the Warriors were able to overcome it and still take the win on their home floor. That being said, this is a rare inexperienced mistake in a big-time moment for a player like Steph Curry.
Just because they avoided disaster does not mean that Golden State can get away with playing sloppy. While the Kings are young, they’ve proven they have no intentions of going away quietly. If they don’t sharpen up, their title defense could come to an early end.
