In theory, having a star duo makes sense in the NBA. In practice, it doesn’t always work out.

Of course, you’ve got to try it. Any general manager with an opportunity to put two elite players together has to take the chance. Still, there are no guarantees.

For example, look at Trae Young and Dejounte Murray of the Atlanta Hawks. Expectations around this duo were high heading into 2022-23. They’ve fallen well short of them.

For that matter, so have Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks. With that said, they’ve barely had half a season to gel.

If the Mavericks can retain Irving in free agency this summer, they have to put the best roster around their star duo they can.

Acquiring Clint Capela of the Hawks would seem like a good start.
