That isn’t to say that there would be fewer eyes on Barrett if the Grizzlies made this deal. After all, they’re contenders.

With that in mind, some may question our wisdom here. The Grizzlies are title hopefuls. Why would they trade for a player who’s been generally underwhelming in his career so far?

Well, it’s partially an upside swing. Barrett is just 22. He’s a less productive player than Brooks, but he’s absolutely got the potential to be a much better one.

Otherwise, there’s a financial motive here too. The Grizzlies are about to get expensive. Brooks is going to earn a deal in free agency that’s comparable to Barrett’s this year.
