The NBA Draft is one of the league’s most reliable streams of talent.
Teams use it. Some teams even intentionally lose to maximize their odds of landing a top pick. It’s called “tanking”, and it exists throughout the NBA – whether you like it or not.
On the other hand, there are some difficulties associated with building through the draft. Scouting is an imperfect science. Even the best general managers are likely to select a bust or two over time.
That’s something a team like the Orlando Magic has to be considering. This team has plenty of young talent, and they’ve drafted well.
At some point, they may want to quit while they’re ahead, and consolidate some of their draft capital to acquire a star player.
Could LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets be that star?
