These days, a star player is usually exchanged for a huge number of first-round picks. The team moving the star is usually looking to rebuild. There are a couple of reasons why we didn’t go that way here.
For starters, both of these teams have other stars. They don’t need to tank. Either of them could simply flip one star for another and hope that they fit their team better.
On the other hand, it’s hard not to wonder if the player-for-picks model could soon expire, or at least lessen in popularity.
Teams are beginning to regret those trades – when they don’t work out, they’ve mortgaged their future for nothing.
