Both of these teams are title contenders this season. Ergo, we can assume that neither will be interested in this deal if they do climb the mountain top. 

Let’s assume they don’t. In that event, either might be open to making significant changes. This deal does exactly that. 

Meanwhile, Harden may actually be a better fit alongside Kawhi Leonard than George is. Where the Clippers’ current duo has overlapping skill sets, Harden is a primary ball-handler and playmaker. 

There is some risk here. The Clippers would need Leonard to put together a healthy season to contend. Of course, that will be true as long as they hold onto Leonard.

With that in mind, pairing him with a lead guard may make more sense than continuing to pair him with another shot creating 3-and-D wing.
