Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
The Celtics do this deal for two reasons.
Firstly, Brown is due to hit free agency after next season. If the Celtics feel like he’s not going to stick around, they might want to move him. Otherwise, he could walk and leave them empty-handed.
Of course, they’re not going to give him away, either. The Celtics would need a good return in order to move Brown. This happens to be a good return.
These picks are structured to be valuable. The Thunder have a lot of first-round picks, but they’re giving away premium ones here. The Sixers and Clippers look like teams that are due to combust, and the Rockets are already in the lottery.
Finally, Giddy and Dort are valuable players too. Giddey especially fills a need for this team as a primary ball-handler and distributor. Still, the main value here is in the draft capital.
