Earlier this week, the update for Minnesota Timberwolves star big man, Karl-Anthony Towns, wasn’t overly encouraging. Head coach Chris Finch revealed that there was no timetable for his return, which was certainly discouraging ahead of the NBA playoffs.

Towns has been sidelined since November 28th because of the calf injury he suffered against the Washington Wizards. He appeared in the first 21 games of the season but has missed 46 consecutive and counting.

Minnesota has held its own without Towns in the lineup, as they are currently 34-33 on the season and in seventh place in the Western Conference. In the 21 games with Towns, the team was 10-11 as they were navigating the fit between him and Rudy Gobert in the frontcourt.

While Towns still has some hurdles to overcome in his return, Finch did provide a much more positive update on his status Wednesday. According to Finch, Towns is ready to take another step forward in his rehab that will move him closer to getting back onto the court for games.

“Today he’s going to have some live activity on the floor, the first time in forever. Some controlled, live-action on the floor. I know he’s looking forward to that.”

That is certainly a step in the right direction. Taking part in live action on the floor is usually one of the last steps before a player receives clearance to participate in full-contact live practices.

Given this update, it shouldn’t be too much longer until Towns is back on the court as he just needs to get his wind back and make sure no setbacks are suffered.

On the season, Towns is averaging 20.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 33.8 minutes per game. Playing a new position seemed to impact him in some regard as his 3-point shooting percentage had plummeted thus far this season.

The 32.5 percent that he is shooting would be a career-low, as his previous low was 34.1 percent as a rookie. For his career, Towns is a 39.3 percent shooter, so there is certainly hope that his percentage will rise when he is able to return and that he will be more comfortable playing alongside Gobert.
