The Sixers have a couple of reasons to do this deal. 

Firstly, it affords them some financial flexibility. Hield and Theis are both on highly moveable contracts. Neither of them will impede any plans this team may like to make moving forward. 

Of course, the Sixers are contenders. They aren’t going to simply salary dump a useful player. They would need to get value in return. 

Luckily, that’s what they’re doing here. Hield is an elite movement shooter who will complement James Harden nicely.
