On the other hand, teams don’t need to trade for a star player to build a contender. They can build one right at home. 

The Golden State Warriors did just that. When they won their first title of the modern era, they did it by relying largely on players they’d drafted. They didn’t need to trade for a star. 

In fact, they never did. That doesn’t mean they didn’t acquire one. When the Warriors acquired Kevin Durant in free agency, it outraged opposing fanbases. 

After all, here was the best team in the NBA acquiring one of its two or three best players. That’s not what’s happening here.
