Restricted free agency can make for some interesting situations in the NBA.
RFAs are free agents – in theory. In practice, their incumbent team can match any offer they receive. If the team wants them badly enough, they can opt to keep them.
Alternatively, the team may also force a sign-and-trade. If they’re open to keeping them, but not set on it, they could tell the team making the offer that they’re going to match it – unless they get something in return.
Cameron Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets is set to hit restricted free agency this summer. He’ll be one of the hottest names on the market.
The Nets may keep him, or see an opportunity for a sign and trade.
