Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
In simple terms, the Jazz do this deal because they’re not in win-now mode.
This young team has plenty of upside. Some expected the Jazz to outright tank this summer. It turned out that they were too talented to do it. On the other hand, they’re still a losing team.
So, why not trade for a young player? Barrett has had his struggles in the NBA thus far. He’s still flashed (here it comes again) potential. That’s all that matters to the Jazz.
In all likelihood, Utah won’t have a clearcut franchise player following this trade. At the same time, they’ll add two quality prospects in the upcoming draft (with their own pick and Minnesota’s).

If they can also add Barrett to a core that already features Lauri Markkanen, they’ll have an exciting young team.
Should the Knicks help them put it together?
