For the Raptors, this deal is about the present and the future. In the present, it could actually make them better. Part of the goal here is to unlock Scottie Barnes.

He’s a little redundant alongside Siakam. Having a player like Turner who typically plays off-ball could allow him to thrive as a primary playmaker. 

Of course, Turner is not the same caliber of player as Siakam. That’s why the Raptors are getting two first-round picks here as well. 

If they lose Fred VanVleet in free agency, that’ll be especially valuable. This team is at a crossroads – they could either make upgrades to win now or start a soft rebuild.
