There is, of course, no roadmap to get either of these organizations back into contention at this point in time. There would be no problem following it if there was one. 

The process of building an NBA contender is more of an art than a science. In order to succeed at this game, it takes a combination of skillful decision-making and a fair amount of luck. 

There are some organizations that tank. Therefore, they deliberately build losing teams so that they can maximize the odds of winning the lottery as much as possible.

There is no doubt that this is a solid method of acquiring good talent, but it may come at the cost of the team culture over time. 

There may have been no intention for the Detroit Pistons to tank this season. In that case, they probably wouldn’t have traded for Bojan Bogdanovic if that was their plan.

Meanwhile, it is also likely that the team began thinking about Victor Wembanyama once Cade Cunningham went down for the season.
