There are a lot of discussions about what the future may hold for the Dallas Mavericks. They took a huge risk acquiring Kyrie Irving ahead of the NBA trade deadline, pairing him with Luka Doncic for a dynamic offensive backcourt. However, this deal could be only a rental.
Irving is set to hit free agency this offseason when his contract expires. He has politely asked media members to not ask questions about the future as he wants things to remain focused on the present with the Mavericks. While he and his teammates may not face questions about his future, it will be a hot topic among the basketball community.
One rumor that continually persisted is that Irving would eventually make his way west and team up once again with LeBron James. The Los Angeles Lakers were the only team that showed real interest in Irving when he requested his trade last offseason and were one of the teams in on him before being traded to the Mavericks.
While the Lakers had grand plans of adding Irving to the duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, could the Dallas Mavericks have their sights set on making a Big 3 of their own now that Irving is in the fold with Doncic?

Mavericks could be a trade partner this offseason.
“LeBron and his camp have been frustrated by how many minutes he has to play. They cant depend on Anthony Davis. They are also mad that Darvin Ham is not keeping the pressure on Anthony Davis.”
“They can’t depend on Anthony Davis. They’re a little upset that Darvin Ham is not keeping the pressure on Anthony Davis… I talked to an NBA source who I’ve known for a long time, he said the Dallas Mavericks and Anthony Davis, keep your eye on it.”
Those are certainly some strong words shared by Cowherd from whoever his source is. But, it is hard to argue against what they shared. Davis has been unable to stay healthy during his tenure with the Lakers, which has put a lot of the onus on James to carry the team.

In the last two seasons, even when he has returned from injuries, he has looked like a shell of himself. Before going down with a foot injury this season, Davis was playing at an MVP level. Since his return, he has seen his efficiency and effectiveness wane.
The critiques of Darvin Ham also have some warrant. While he didn’t have any control over who was on the roster, how he has gone about distributing minutes has raised some eyebrows. Why there are stretches of the game that the Lakers go without one of James or Davis on the floor is anyone’s guess.

Based on what Cowherd has shared, it sounds like there is a real chance that Davis is on the move this off-season. James continues to play at a high level but without Davis following suit, the Lakers’ aspirations of challenging for a title will go by the wayside.
