NBA Veterans Quickly Finding New Teams After Buyouts

The NBA Trade Deadline provided a lot of action as numerous trades were completed. Some were bigger than others, with the Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant blockbusters garnering a lot of attention and headlines. But, there were plenty of other deals made that will lead to another wild few days and weeks on the buyout market.

For some contending teams, this is when they will make their biggest moves of the season. Veterans are traded to rebuilding teams and then work on buyouts with their new teams. That will lead to an arms race by teams at the top of the standings looking to fine-tune their roster.

Just days after the deadline, we are already seeing some movement in that regard. Point guard Reggie Jackson was traded by the LA Clippers to the Charlotte Hornets ahead of the deadline in exchange for center Mason Plumlee.

He didn’t even report to the Hornets and worked out a buyout. He is reportedly on his way to the Denver Nuggets, who could use some help in the backcourt after trading Bones Hyland to the Clippers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were one of two teams to not make a trade this season in the NBA. But, they have already made an upgrade on the buyout market, reportedly signing Danny Green to a one-year deal worth $2 million.

The Cavaliers must feel highly of Green as they paid him more than the veteran’s minimum to join the team. He was traded by the Memphis Grizzlies to the Houston Rockets ahead of the deadline but didn’t even make it to Houston before being bought out.

Another veteran wing that was on the move ahead of the deadline was Justin Holiday. He was also traded to the Rockets but reached a buyout before even making it to Houston. But, Holiday will be remaining in the state of Texas as he is set to join the Dallas Mavericks.

Also heading to the Western Conference is Terrence Ross. Ross wasn’t traded ahead of the deadline, instead reaching a buyout with the Orlando Magic in the following days. Ross has been on the trade block for a while but no trade ever materialized.

Ross was originally planning to sign with the Mavericks but had a change of heart after new Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia and head coach Monty Williams joined the fray. They convinced Ross that Phoenix was the place for him as he will reportedly be joining the new-look Suns once he clears waivers.

The 11th-year veteran will bolster the bench unit for a Suns team that made a splash by acquiring Durant from the Nets. He will fill an integral role with the second unit and could have a prominent role right off the bat, especially with Durant recovering from injury and the Suns’ depth at the position already being tested before trading away Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson and Jae Crowder.
