Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
Yes, the fit between Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns has been underwhelming. Still, that’s only part of the problem in Minnesota.
Many would argue that Russell isn’t an optimal partner for Anthony Edwards, either. His tendency to probe the pick-and-roll slows the game down, and Edwards is something of a speed demon.
By that logic, some will argue that Paul isn’t an ideal fit here either. He’s a similarly pick-and-roll heavy floor general. The difference is that Paul is also a much more reliable floor spacer.
In all likelihood, the Wolves would scale his role down to fit with Edwards.

This deal also helps them avoid paying Russell. He’s a free agent this year, and he’s likely to command more on the open market than the Timberwolves will want to pay for a player who may not fit alongside their biggest star.
